Bhubaneswar: The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) has once again showcased its commitment to empowering young minds by nurturing a remarkable talent. Leeza Majhi, hailing from a humble background in Uchkapat, Bamra block of Sambalpur district, has achieved a significant milestone by clearing NEET-2025 and gaining admission to the MBBS program at Government Medical College & Hospital, Sundargarh. Leeza, who belongs to the Kisan (ST) community, began her journey at KGBV Bamra-IV in 2021, residing in the hostel while completing her studies in Classes IX and X.
The nurturing and encouraging atmosphere of the residential school played a crucial role in her academic development and aspirations. After finishing her matriculation at Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV), Bamra in the 2022-23 academic year with an impressive score of 82 percent, she was accepted into the Plus II Science program at OAV (Iconic) Bhubaneswar, where she achieved 81.6 percent.
Leeza's hard work and determination culminated in her success in the NEET exam in 2025, allowing her to realize her dream of becoming a doctor. Reflecting on her journey, Leeza expressed her heartfelt appreciation for KGBV, which provided her with free residential education, mentorship, and comprehensive support that significantly influenced her academic trajectory. KGBVs are special residential institutions initiated by the Union government to offer quality education to underprivileged adolescent girls from marginalized communities.
Odisha has been a leader in this initiative, and the inspiring narratives of KGBV graduates like Leeza highlight its transformative effects. School officials expressed immense pride, stating, “Leeza’s achievement is not merely a personal victory but a beacon of hope for numerous girls in rural Odisha. Her path from KGBV to medical college illustrates that education is the most potent tool for empowerment.” This accomplishment represents another significant milestone for KGBV and is anticipated to motivate many more girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to aspire high and chase their dreams.
